Rangierdienst

Rangierdienst, or shunting service, refers to the railway operations that move and assemble rolling stock within yards, depots, and terminals. The purpose is to position cars for loading, unloading, or interchange with through trains. Shunting is performed by specialized crews using shunting locomotives or other yard vehicles, rather than for mainline propulsion.

Typical tasks in Rangierdienst include coupling and uncoupling wagons, applying and releasing brakes, brake testing, and handling ground signals. Crews coordinate with the dispatch center to sequence movements and prevent conflicts. In classification yards, wagons are sorted by destination and grouped into trains; in container or bulk terminals, cars are prepared for efficient interchange with other modes of transport.

Rangierdienst is carried out by trained personnel such as rangierführer (shunter) or yard crews, often under the direction of a yard supervisor. In many railway systems, a locomotive engineer (Lokführer) may also perform shunting tasks if authorized by appropriate regulations. Safety considerations are central, given the close-proximity movement of equipment, manual handling, and the risk of derailment or incidents during coupling and uncoupling.
