Rangeextending is a term used to describe techniques and devices designed to increase the operational range of a system by supplementing energy supply, conserving energy, or improving signal reach. It is used in several fields, most prominently in transportation and wireless communications, and is often pursued to reduce downtime, extend mission endurance, or lessen the need for frequent recharging or reloading.

In transportation, rangeextending commonly refers to mechanisms that allow electrified vehicles to travel farther than their battery alone would permit. A typical implementation is a range extender: an auxiliary power unit, such as a small internal combustion engine or turbine-generator, that charges the main energy storage or provides direct propulsion when needed. This approach can reduce range anxiety and enable longer trips, but it adds weight, complexity, emissions during operation, and cost.
