Randschleier

Randschleier, literally edge veil, is a German term used in technical contexts to denote a thin, veil-like edge around an object, image, or surface. The precise meaning varies by field, but it generally describes a peripheral haze, blur, or glow that softens margins.

In optics and photography, randschleier refers to veiling glare or halo at the periphery of a high-contrast scene or image. Causes include light scattering within the lens, diffraction at aperture blades, sensor bloom, or scattering within the specimen. It reduces edge sharpness and perceived contrast. Mitigation includes optimizing illumination, changing aperture, using lenses with anti-reflective coatings, and applying appropriate post-processing adjustments.

In art conservation and imaging, the term can describe a faint glaze or varnish haze at the edges of a painting or its imaging record, which can affect interpretation of brushwork or color boundaries. This can arise from varnish aging, uneven cleaning, or environmental factors and may inform conservation decisions or dating.

In materials science and microscopy, the edge veil can appear in thin films or at interfaces, where boundary effects, diffusion, or contamination create peripheral contrast differences. It is often considered when analyzing boundary properties or preparing samples for imaging.
