Rahmentypen

Rahmentypen (frame types) is a term used primarily in German-speaking engineering and architecture to describe categories of frames that form the structural backbone of a system or object. A frame type distinguishes how a frame carries loads, resists deformation, and interfaces with components, independent of the exact material or manufacturing method.

In mechanical engineering and construction, frames are selected according to geometry, stiffness, and load paths. Common forms include rectangular or box frames that enclose components, lattice or truss frames that optimize strength-to-weight, and space frame concepts that use interconnected struts to form a rigid, lightweight structure. Frames may be rigid or braced, welded or bolted, and can be made from steel, aluminum, wood, or composites. In machine tools, frame shapes influence stiffness, vibration damping, and accuracy; in buildings, frames determine how loads from floors and roofs are transmitted to foundations.

In automotive design, frame typology is crucial; traditional ladder frames and boxed frames support engines, drivetrains, and suspension systems, whereas unibody constructions integrate the body and frame for lower weight. In architecture and in the construction of windows or doors, Rahmentypen refer to frame materials and constructions such as wooden, metal, or composite frames, with variants like fixed and operable configurations, and features such as thermal breaks.
