RTPn

RTPn is a term used in academic and industry discussions to denote a family of real-time transport protocols that extend the Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP). Unlike a formal standard, RTPn represents a conceptual framework for exploring enhancements to real-time media transport, including timing accuracy, reliability models, and network adaptation.

Design goals commonly attributed to RTPn include tighter synchronization of streams, support for multi-path and path selection, adaptive playout buffering, and flexible reliability modes that blend low-latency behavior with selective error correction or retransmission. Proposals often emphasize improved handling of jitter, congestion, and variable network conditions while aiming to preserve compatibility with existing RTP-based ecosystems.

Core concepts frequently discussed in RTPn designs include a separation of control and data planes, richer capability negotiation, and enhanced feedback mechanisms. Extensions to RTCP and related control messages may provide more detailed reports on latency, jitter, loss, and network status, enabling more responsive playout and adaptation. Some approaches propose new payload types or extension headers while striving to maintain interoperability with standard RTP endpoints when possible.

Status and use of RTPn remain largely exploratory. It appears in research papers, simulations, and prototype implementations used to study how real-time traffic can perform under heterogeneous and fluctuating networks. As such, RTPn serves as a theoretical and experimental reference point rather than an established protocol in production networks.

Relation to RTP and RTCP is central in discussions, with RTPn seen as a potential path to enhance real-time transport while preserving backward compatibility. If adopted, implementations would likely offer configurable fallbacks to standard RTP in environments with limited support.
