RBT

RBT stands for Registered Behavior Technician, a credential in the field of applied behavior analysis (ABA) awarded by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). The RBT credential certifies individuals to implement ABA services under the supervision of a BCBA or BCaBA.

RBTs typically work with clients who have autism spectrum disorder or other developmental conditions to carry out behavior-analytic interventions designed by a supervising clinician, collect data, and document progress.

Becoming an RBT involves meeting eligibility requirements (age, education), completing a required training program (often about 40 hours) covering measurement, assessment, skill acquisition, and behavior reduction, completing a competency assessment conducted by a BCBA or BCaBA, and passing the RBT certification exam. After certification, RBTs must receive ongoing supervision, including regular feedback, and meet continuing education or renewal requirements to maintain the credential.

RBTs play a direct role in ABA programs, typically delivering discrete trial training, natural environment teaching, token economies, and behavior reduction strategies as designed by supervisors. They work in settings such as schools, clinics, homes, or community agencies, documenting data on client progress and reporting to supervising analysts.

The credential is one of several levels in the BACB system, with higher credentials such as Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA) and Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) representing different scopes of responsibility.

Note: RBT can also stand for other terms in different fields, but in the context of behavior analysis, it denotes the registered behavior technician credential.
