It refers to the practice of reserving a table in a public place, most commonly a restaurant or café, for a group of people. This is typically done by leaving personal belongings, such as a bag or coat, on the chairs or the table itself to signal that the table is occupied and will be used shortly.

The custom of pöydänpitoa is prevalent in Finland, especially during busy times or when a group is expecting to arrive soon. It allows individuals to secure a spot while others in their party are still arriving, ordering at the counter, or using the restroom. While generally accepted, the practice can sometimes lead to misunderstandings if a table is left unattended for an extended period, potentially being taken by others.

There isn't a strict etiquette for pöydänpitoa, but it is generally understood that the items left should clearly indicate an intention to return. Leaving a single item might be less persuasive than leaving multiple items, such as coats for several people.
