Pökkun

Pökkun is the Icelandic term for packaging. It refers to the materials and the process used to contain, protect, handle, store, and transport goods, as well as to the containers, wrappings, and labels themselves. In English it corresponds to “packaging” or “packaging materials.”

Packaging serves multiple functions: it protects contents from damage and contamination, enables safe handling and stacking, preserves quality and shelf life, and communicates information such as product identity, contents, instructions, and branding. Packaging is typically categorized by level: primary packaging is in direct contact with the product (such as a bottle or bag), secondary packaging groups units (such as a carton containing multiple items), and tertiary packaging provides bulk handling support (such as pallets and shrink wrap).

Materials vary: paper and cardboard; plastics; glass; metal; and composite materials. Design often aims at material efficiency, barrier performance, durability, and recyclability. Innovations focus on lightweighting, recyclable or compostable materials, barrier coatings, and digital labeling or tamper-evident features.

Environmental and regulatory aspects: packaging contributes to waste streams and requires waste management strategies. In Iceland and the European Economic Area, producers are often responsible for the take-back and recycling of packaging under extended producer responsibility schemes. Targets and standards address recycling rates, separate collection, and reduction of unnecessary packaging.

Industry and usage: pökkun is used across retail, food, consumer goods, and logistics sectors, with growing emphasis on sustainability and circular economy practices. The term reflects a broad set of practices that balance protection, information, and environmental considerations in modern commerce.
