Emerging in the early 2000s in Helsinki, it developed among artists who sought to integrate the experience of vertical space—walls, columns, and towers—into painting and image making. The term encompasses both traditional canvas works and digitally produced pieces that employ vertical segmentation and progressive scaling.

Practitioners arrange images or color fields in vertical bands, often using modular panels or tall formats. Techniques include sequential glazing along the vertical axis, color-field layering that shifts in value and hue from top to bottom, and, in digital works, tiling or upscaling algorithms that preserve edge integrity while creating continuous vertical rhythm.

Historically, Pystyskaalauksella drew on Finnish modernism's sculptural use of space and on contemporary installation practices. Notable early exhibitions occurred in Helsinki galleries and public spaces, where the vertical motif was paired with sound and light installations. The movement has since spread to neighboring Nordic countries and has found a foothold in public art programs updating interiors and exteriors with vertical scaled imagery.

Critics note the approach's attention to architectural scale and episodic perception but debate its accessibility and emotional resonance. Proponents argue the method reframes painting as an encounter with space, time, and scale rather than a single image.
