Puudutusta is the Finnish term for anesthesia, the medical practice of blocking sensation to enable procedures with minimal or no pain. It encompasses several methods that vary in depth and scope, from numbing a small area to rendering a patient unconscious. The choice depends on the procedure, patient factors, and desired recovery profile.

Local anesthesia uses agents such as lidocaine or bupivacaine applied by injection or topical routes to block nerve impulses in a focused area. It is commonly used for dental work, skin procedures, and minor surgeries. Regional anesthesia, including nerve blocks and spinal or epidural techniques, numbs larger regions and is frequently employed for limb operations and childbirth. General anesthesia induces a controlled loss of consciousness and sensation through inhaled or intravenous drugs, with airway support and continuous monitoring. Topical anesthesia applies anesthetics directly to mucous membranes or skin. Sedation may accompany regional or local anesthesia to reduce anxiety and create comfort.

Safety and monitoring are essential. Anesthesiologists or trained clinicians evaluate medical history, allergies, and current medications and monitor vital signs throughout the procedure. Risks vary by method and include allergic reactions, local tissue toxicity, nerve injury, bleeding, infection, and in the case of general anesthesia, respiratory or cardiovascular complications. Contraindications include infection at the administration site, patient refusal, certain heart or blood clotting disorders, and pregnancy considerations. Proper technique and equipment minimize risks and maximize recovery time.
