Putzsystems

Putzsysteme, or plastering systems, refer to coordinated sets of plaster layers used to render interior and exterior walls. They are designed to be applied as a complete package and typically include substrate preparation, an adhesion primer, a base coat (Unterputz), reinforcement such as glass fiber or metal mesh, and a finishing coat (Oberputz). In exterior applications the system may incorporate an insulation layer as part of an external thermal insulation composite system (ETICS).

Common types of Putzsysteme include mineral plaster systems based on cement and/or lime, lime-putz systems that emphasize breathability and moisture management, and gypsum-based systems used mainly for interior walls. Cementitious and lime-based finishes can be combined with various textures and colors. For insulating façades, ETICS integrate insulation boards with a reinforced base coat and a topcoat to provide thermal performance and weather resistance.

The choice of system depends on factors such as substrate, climate, moisture conditions, load requirements, and desired aesthetics. Putzsysteme aim to control interior moisture, improve energy efficiency, provide weather resistance, and offer durable surface finishes with specific textures. They also influence indoor air quality and thermal comfort, particularly lime- and cementitious mixes.

Installation follows manufacturers’ specifications and applicable standards. Key considerations include proper substrate preparation, correct placement and embedding of reinforcement, appropriate base coat thickness, and compatibility between insulation, base coat, and finish coat to prevent cracking or delamination. In many regions, Putzsysteme are standardized or certificated, with performance data and warranties provided by manufacturers.
