Purkauslähteet

Purkauslähteet, or discharge sources, refer to points or areas where electrical current leaves a conductor and enters an insulating medium or another conductor. This phenomenon is often associated with high voltages and can manifest in various forms, including corona discharge, arcing, and sparking.

Corona discharge is a partial electrical breakdown of the air surrounding a conductor, occurring when the electric field strength exceeds a critical value but is not sufficient to cause a full spark or arc. It is characterized by a faint glow and a hissing sound, and it can lead to power loss and degradation of insulating materials over time.

Arcing involves a sustained, luminous plasma channel formed by the passage of electrical current through a gas. Arcs are typically more energetic than corona discharges and can generate significant heat and light. They are often observed during electrical faults or when switching high-power circuits.

Sparking is a transient, luminous discharge that occurs when the electric field strength in a gap between two conductors momentarily exceeds the dielectric strength of the intervening medium, usually air. Sparks are brief and often accompanied by a snapping sound.
