Prosessoriyksiköitä, commonly referred to as CPUs (Central Processing Units) or simply processors, are the primary components of a computer responsible for executing instructions. They are the "brains" of the operation, carrying out calculations, logical operations, and controlling the flow of data within the system. A processor typically consists of billions of transistors etched onto a silicon chip, enabling it to perform complex tasks at incredible speeds.

The core function of a processor is to fetch, decode, and execute instructions from a program. Fetching involves retrieving the next instruction from memory. Decoding translates the instruction into a series of actions the processor can understand. Finally, execution carries out those actions, which might involve arithmetic calculations, data movement, or logical comparisons. This cycle repeats millions or billions of times per second, allowing computers to perform a vast range of tasks from simple word processing to intricate scientific simulations.

Modern processors often feature multiple cores, meaning they have two or more independent processing units on a single chip. This allows them to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, significantly improving performance and multitasking capabilities. Clock speed, measured in gigahertz (GHz), indicates how many cycles a processor can perform per second, with higher clock speeds generally correlating to faster processing. Cache memory, a small amount of very fast memory located on the processor itself, also plays a crucial role by storing frequently accessed data and instructions, reducing the time it takes to retrieve them from slower main memory.
