Prolene

Prolene is a brand name used for polypropylene surgical sutures and related implant products manufactured by Ethicon, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson. The Prolene line includes monofilament sutures and associated mesh devices designed for durable tissue support and long-term implantation.

Composition and properties: Prolene sutures are made from polypropylene, a chemically inert polymer. They are non-absorbable and monofilament, which provides a smooth passage through tissue and low tissue drag. They retain substantial tensile strength over time in vivo and typically provoke relatively low tissue reactivity, resulting in minimal inflammatory response.
