Projektiajoitus, often translated as project timing or project scheduling, refers to the process of establishing the duration of project activities and the sequence in which they should be performed. It is a critical component of project management, aiming to ensure that projects are completed within their allocated timeframes and resources. This involves identifying all the necessary tasks, estimating the time required for each task, and then arranging them in a logical order, considering dependencies between activities.

The development of a project schedule typically starts with defining the project scope and breaking it down into manageable tasks. Techniques such as the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) are often employed to achieve this decomposition. Once tasks are identified, their durations are estimated using various methods, including expert judgment, analogous estimating, parametric estimating, and three-point estimating.

Following duration estimation, the project manager establishes the sequence of activities, identifying dependencies such as finish-to-start, start-to-start, finish-to-finish, and start-to-finish. This sequencing allows for the creation of a project timeline, often visualized using Gantt charts or network diagrams. Key elements of the schedule include milestones, critical path analysis to identify the longest sequence of tasks that determines the shortest possible project duration, and buffer times to account for potential delays. Regular monitoring and control of the schedule are essential to keep the project on track and to make adjustments as needed.
