Progeszteronszármazékok, commonly known as progestins, are synthetic compounds that mimic the effects of progesterone, a natural hormone. These substances are widely used in medicine for various purposes, including contraception, hormone replacement therapy, and the treatment of gynecological conditions.

The development of progestins began in the mid-20th century, with the aim of creating orally active and more potent analogs of progesterone. Numerous progestins have since been synthesized, each with varying potencies, metabolic profiles, and receptor affinities. Some of the most well-known include medroxyprogesterone acetate, norethindrone, and levonorgestrel.

Progestins exert their effects by binding to progesterone receptors in target tissues, such as the uterus, mammary glands, and brain. In contraception, they primarily work by inhibiting ovulation, thickening cervical mucus to prevent sperm penetration, and altering the uterine lining to make implantation less likely. In hormone replacement therapy, they are often used in conjunction with estrogens to protect the uterine lining from the proliferative effects of estrogen.

While generally safe and effective, progestins can have side effects, which vary depending on the specific compound and dosage. These can include menstrual irregularities, breast tenderness, mood changes, and, in some cases, an increased risk of blood clots or cardiovascular events. The selection of a particular progestin and its use are determined by medical professionals based on individual patient needs and risk factors.
