Procesoro

Procesoro is the Esperanto term for a processor, the electronic component responsible for executing the instructions of computer programs. In common usage, it refers most often to the central processing unit (CPU), but it can denote any device that processes data according to a sequence of instructions, including microcontrollers, digital signal processors, and graphics processing units when considered as processing elements.

The processor fetches instructions from memory, decodes them, and executes operations using the arithmetic logic unit (ALU) and a control unit. It coordinates with memory, caches, and input/output systems, all synchronized by a clock. The processor implements an instruction set architecture (ISA) and is built on a microarchitecture that determines how instructions are processed internally. Performance and behavior depend on factors such as instruction width, pipeline design, and cache hierarchy.

Modern procesoroj often feature multiple cores, enabling parallel execution of tasks, and pipelining to improve instruction throughput. They employ hierarchical caches (L1, L2, L3) to reduce memory latency and may include specialized units for floating-point arithmetic, vector operations, or graphics processing. Key performance determinants include clock speed, core count, pipeline depth, cache size, memory bandwidth, and efficiency of the ISA and microarchitecture. Power consumption and thermal design also influence practical performance and reliability.

Variants of processing devices include CPUs for personal computers and servers, microcontrollers for embedded systems, digital signal processors for multimedia tasks, and graphics processing units acting as highly parallel processors. The concept of the procesoro has evolved from simple fixed-function devices to highly capable, multi-core, energy-efficient units that form the core of modern computing systems.
