Problembilde

Problembilde is a Dutch term referring to a structured representation of a problem situation, used to make the problem explicit and to guide inquiry and analysis. A problembilde can take multiple forms, including visual diagrams, narratives, and scenario sketches, and it typically integrates key elements such as stakeholders, objectives, constraints, causal relationships, data points, and uncertainties. The purpose is to provide a common reference that helps diverse participants understand the context, reason about causes, and generate and evaluate potential solutions.

In education and organizational contexts, problembilde is commonly used in problem-based learning, systems thinking, design thinking, and research design. It supports sensemaking, facilitates communication, and helps structure discussions and investigations. By making implicit assumptions explicit, it enables critical reflection, comparison of alternative explanations, and alignment among team members.

Implementation considerations include ensuring accuracy and relevance, avoiding bias, and maintaining the representation as a living document that can be updated as new information becomes available. It is often most effective when developed collaboratively with input from multiple stakeholders and when linked to data, evidence, and evaluation criteria. Potential limitations include the risk of oversimplification, premature closure, or misinterpretation if the problembilde is not well facilitated or continuously revised.
