Premakeup refers to the series of preparatory steps and products applied to the face before the placement of cosmetics. The goal is to create a smooth, clean, and stable canvas that enhances the longevity and appearance of makeup. A typical premakeup routine begins with cleansing to remove dirt, oil, and residual skin care products. Eyelid and brow cleansers or face washes with gentle surfactants are common choices. Following cleansing, a toner may be applied to help balance skin pH and refine pores, though some users skip this step. Moisturizers tailored to skin type—cream, gel, or lotion—ensure adequate hydration and minimize the appearance of fine lines that could interfere with makeup adhesion.

After moisturizing, a primer is usually used. Primers can serve multiple functions: they fill in surface irregularities, control oil production, and improve pigment vibrancy. They come in formulations for mattifying, illuminating, or soothing the skin. Some people choose a dedicated eye primer to seal the under-eye area and reduce crease formation. In addition to these base products, tretinone or other anti-aging treatments may be incorporated as needed, though they are typically used well before a makeup session to avoid interactions.

The benefits of a consistent premakeup routine include a longer wear time, smoother application, and a more even finish. Professionals often recommend tailoring the steps to specific skin concerns such as acne, sensitivity, or dryness, and modulating product intensity accordingly.
