Poulsard

Poulsard, also known as Ploussard, is a red wine grape variety grown chiefly in the Jura region of eastern France. It is notable for producing very pale red wines with a light body, low tannin, and high acidity, a contrast to many other red varieties.

Viticulture and characteristics: The vine tends to bud late and ripens mid to late, with very thin skins that make the grape sensitive to rot and oxidation. Yields can be variable, and the grape is prone to oxidation if not carefully managed. Wines made from Poulsard often show a pale pigment that can be enhanced or preserved through limited maceration, though some producers experiment with longer skin contact to create delicate orange-toned wines. The aroma profile typically includes red berries, strawberry, and cherry, with floral notes and a fresh, spirited character.

Winemaking and styles: In Jura, Poulsard is commonly used in red blends with Trousseau (Bastardo) and, less frequently, Pinot Noir, contributing perfume, acidity, and a light color. It is also produced as varietal wines and can appear in rosé or skin-contact styles that emphasize freshness and fruit. Poulsard is one of the grape varieties used in Vin de Paille production in Jura, where dried grapes are concentrated to create dessert-style wines.

Region and synonyms: The grape is most closely associated with the Jura, particularly around Arbois and Pupillin, and is part of the broader Côtes du Jura appellation area. Synonymously, it is known as Ploussard in some locales.
