Positsioonisorteerimine is a specialized sorting technique used primarily in computer science and information retrieval to organize data records according to the position of specific elements within those records rather than by their entire value. The concept originated in the late 1970s as a response to the growing demand for efficient indexing in large text databases, where traditional key‑based sorting methods proved too slow for documents with high redundancy.

In its basic form, the algorithm examines a designated position—such as the nth word in a sentence or the third character in a string—and arranges all records in ascending or descending order according to the item found at that position. Unlike lexical sorting, which compares entire strings, positional sorting limits comparison scope, thereby reducing the number of comparisons and memory needed in many applications. This attribute makes it particularly useful for sorting subtitles, music track listings, or bibliographic entries, where the initial token often dictates placement.

Implementation of positional sorting typically involves a two‑step process. First, the relevant positional items are extracted and stored in a temporary buffer. Second, a conventional comparison‑based sorting algorithm—often quicksort or mergesort—is applied to that buffer, with each comparison indirectly reflecting the position-based value of the original record. Modern implementations may integrate positional sorting into database query optimizers or full‑text search engines, allowing for on‑the‑fly ordering of search results based on a prominent keyword's location.

Variants of the technique exist, such as multi‑level positional sorting, where a hierarchy of positions is used to break ties, and adaptive positional sorting, which dynamically adjusts the target position depending on the dataset’s characteristics. Despite its niche application, positional sorting remains a valuable tool for specific data organization tasks where positional relevance outweighs overall lexical ordering.
