Positionointijärjestelmän, often translated as positioning system, refers to any technological or methodological framework designed to determine the location of an object or entity. These systems are fundamental to a wide range of applications, from navigation and logistics to surveying and scientific research. The underlying principles can vary significantly, encompassing methods such as triangulation, trilateration, dead reckoning, and the use of external references.

Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), such as GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and BeiDou, are perhaps the most well-known examples of positioning systems. They rely on a constellation of satellites transmitting precise timing and orbital data. Receivers on Earth calculate their position by measuring the time it takes for signals from multiple satellites to arrive, thereby determining the distance to each satellite.

Other positioning systems may involve ground-based infrastructure, such as cellular towers for mobile phone location or Wi-Fi access points for indoor positioning. Inertial navigation systems (INS) use accelerometers and gyroscopes to track an object's movement relative to a known starting point, often used in conjunction with GNSS for increased accuracy and in environments where satellite signals are unavailable. The choice of positioning system depends on factors like required accuracy, cost, operating environment, and the specific application's needs.
