Poraputkisto

Poraputkisto is a term used in Finnish civil engineering to describe a perforated pipe drainage system designed to collect and convey subsurface water away from structures or areas that require moisture control. The system is typically installed in trenches and forms a network that captures groundwater and surface water, reducing hydrostatic pressure and moisture-related problems.

A poraputkisto usually consists of perforated or slotted pipes connected to a discharge point, such as a drain, sump, or natural outlet. The pipes are often wrapped in geotextile fabric and surrounded by drainage media like gravel or specialized backfill to prevent soil intrusion and to aid filtration. Cleanouts and access points are commonly included to facilitate maintenance.

Common applications include drainage around building foundations, basements and crawl spaces, terraces, and landscaped areas. It is also used in agricultural drainage and other situations where excess water in the soil must be removed efficiently. In colder climates, frost considerations and insulation may influence trench depth and material choices.

Design considerations encompass pipe material (such as PVC or HDPE), diameter and perforation pattern, trench depth, slope, backfill specifications, and spacing of pipes within the network. Proper filtration and maintenance are essential to prevent clogging and to ensure long-term performance. Installation generally follows local codes and standards, with attention to achieving adequate drainage capacity and reliable access for cleaning and repairs.
