Platinpolering

Platinpolering, or platinum polishing, is the process of creating a smooth, highly reflective surface on platinum metal. It is commonly performed on jewelry, watches, and industrial components made of platinum or platinum alloys. The goal is to remove fine scratches and to highlight the metal’s natural luster.

The process typically involves progressive abrasion. Technicians begin with a coarse abrasive to level deeper scratches, then move to finer grits, using polishing wheels or belts made of cloth or felt. Diamond pastes or powders and other polishing compounds are applied with soft wheels to minimize thinning. In jewelry shops, stages usually include pre-polishing, final polishing, and often a final lustrous finish with a rouge or similar compound. Some facilities also employ electro-polishing or chemical polishing to achieve very smooth, uniform surfaces on complex shapes or to reduce tool marking.

Finish types include a high-gloss mirror polish, a satin or brushed finish, and specialty textures. Polished platinum surfaces are valued for their bright color and overall durability, though visible scratches can be more apparent on highly polished platinum due to its reflective nature. Because platinum is dense and tough, polishing can be time-consuming and may remove noticeable amounts of material if not carefully controlled.

Important considerations include avoiding overheating to prevent softening or deformation and balancing surface quality against metal loss. Aftercare involves gentle cleaning with appropriate solutions to preserve the finish and prevent tarnish or residue buildup. Regular professional polishing can restore a worn surface and maintain the desired appearance.
