Plastifikatorite, commonly known as plasticizers, are chemical additives used to increase the plasticity or fluidity of a material, most commonly plastics. They work by embedding themselves between the polymer chains, reducing the intermolecular forces and allowing the chains to slide past each other more easily. This process makes the material softer, more flexible, and easier to process.

The most widely used class of plasticizers are phthalates, such as dioctyl phthalate (DOP) and diisononyl phthalate (DINP). Other types include adipates, citrates, and trimellitates, each offering slightly different properties and applications. The selection of a plasticizer depends on the desired flexibility, temperature range, compatibility with the polymer, and regulatory requirements.

Plasticizers are essential in the production of a vast array of plastic products. They are crucial for making polyvinyl chloride (PVC) flexible, enabling its use in applications like wire insulation, flooring, medical tubing, and inflatable structures. They are also used in paints, adhesives, sealants, and coatings to improve their workability and performance.

While highly effective, some plasticizers, particularly certain phthalates, have raised environmental and health concerns due to their potential to leach out of products. This has led to increased research and development of alternative, non-phthalate plasticizers that are considered safer and more sustainable. Regulatory bodies worldwide have also implemented restrictions on the use of certain plasticizers in specific applications, especially those involving food contact or children's products.
