Plasmolyysiin

Plasmolyysiin is a hypothetical osmotic agent described in some educational and speculative contexts as a compound capable of inducing plasmolysis in plant cells. The name blends 'plasmolysis' with the common chemical-suffix -iin, reflecting its proposed function as an osmotically active molecule.

In concept, application of plasmolyysiin to plant tissue in an otherwise saline- or hypertonic environment raises extracellular osmotic pressure, driving water out of the cell. The plant protoplast contracts and the plasma membrane pulls away from the cell wall, defining plasmolysis. The effect is largely reversible upon removal of the agent and restoration of isotonic conditions.

Identity and chemical nature of plasmolyysiin are not standardized in major databases or peer-reviewed literature. In most references it is described as a fictional or illustrative tool rather than a confirmed chemical substance, with no agreed synthesis route or safety profile.

Despite its uncertain real-world status, plasmolyysiin is used in teaching and thought experiments to illustrate osmotic stress, turgor pressure, and the mechanical relationship between the plasma membrane and cell wall. It serves as a theoretical counterpoint to true osmotic agents or to non-penetrating solutes.
