Phonation-related refers to phenomena and processes involved in phonation, the production of voiced sound by vibration of the vocal folds within the larynx. It encompasses the neuromuscular control of the vocal folds, the aerodynamics of subglottal air flow, and the tissue properties of the vocal folds and surrounding structures. In humans, phonation is essential to speech and singing and can vary across individuals and contexts due to physiological, hormonal, and environmental factors.

Physiology: The vocal folds, located in the larynx, come together (adduction) and apart (abduction) under neural control. Subglottal pressure from the lungs drives opening, while the elastic properties of the folds and the mucosal wave produce quasi-periodic vibration. The fundamental frequency (f0) is determined mainly by vocal fold length, tension, and mass. Changes in tension or mass alter pitch, while different patterns of adduction influence voice quality and dynamic range.

Acoustics and perception: The vibrating glottal source shapes the voice spectrum; f0, spectral tilt, and harmonics interact with the vocal tract. Common phonation types include modal (typical speaking voice), breathy, creaky, and pressed phonation, each producing distinct perceptual qualities. Phonation also interacts with articulation and prosody.

Measurement and disorders: Clinicians assess phonation using laryngoscopy or stroboscopy to visualize the vocal folds, sometimes with high-speed imaging or electroglottography (EGG) to estimate vocal fold contact. Acoustic metrics such as jitter, shimmer, H1–H2, and cepstral peak prominence are used to quantify voice quality. Phonation-related disorders include dysphonia, node and polyp formation, vocal fold paralysis, and mucosal inflammation. Management may involve voice therapy, vocal hygiene, surgical intervention, or pharmacologic treatment.

Research and applications: Phonation research informs voice diagnosis, rehabilitation, and voice synthesis. Variations in phonation affect intelligibility, expressiveness, and fatigue; understanding the phonatory mechanism supports clinical decision-making and the development of therapeutic and technological tools for vocal health.
