Pfeilherstellers, also known as arrow makers, were skilled craftspeople responsible for the creation of arrows throughout history. The art of arrow making was a crucial component of archery, which played a significant role in hunting, warfare, and sport across various cultures. A typical arrow consisted of several distinct parts, each requiring specialized knowledge and materials to produce.

The shaft of an arrow was most commonly made from wood, with types like ash, cedar, or birch being favored for their straight grain and strength. Pfeilherstellers would meticulously select, straighten, and fletch these shafts. Fletching, usually made from bird feathers (such as goose or turkey), was essential for stabilizing the arrow's flight. These feathers were split, trimmed, and glued or tied to the rear of the shaft.

The arrowhead, or pile, was perhaps the most varied and critical component. Pfeilherstellers utilized a range of materials depending on the intended use. For hunting, broadhead points designed to inflict maximum damage were common. In warfare, bodkin points, which were narrow and hardened, were used to penetrate armor. The process of crafting these points involved knapping for stone, carving for bone, and forging and sharpening for metal.

Finally, the nock, a groove at the rear of the shaft, was essential for seating the arrow on the bowstring. This was typically carved directly into the wooden shaft, ensuring a secure fit.
