In Berlin, the term Berliner Pfannkuchen is commonly used for a jelly-filled doughnut rather than a pancake, illustrating regional terminology differences.

Savory versions also occur, including fillings such as cheese, ham, mushrooms, or herbs, making Pfannkuchen suitable for meals beyond breakfast. Some recipes vary the batter with yeast, sparkling water, or buttermilk for different textures. Common serving practices include folding or rolling the pancake with fillings, or simply folding with sugar and lemon juice.
