Persoonallisuushäiriöille, or personality disorders, are a group of mental health conditions characterized by long-term, pervasive patterns of inner experience and behavior that deviate significantly from cultural expectations. These patterns typically affect multiple areas of functioning, including cognition, affectivity, interpersonal functioning, and impulse control. The onset of these disorders is usually in adolescence or early adulthood, and they are generally stable over time.

Personality disorders are broadly categorized into three clusters by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). Cluster A includes paranoid, schizoid, and schizotypal personality disorders, often characterized by odd or eccentric behavior. Cluster B encompasses antisocial, borderline, histrionic, and narcissistic personality disorders, which tend to be dramatic, emotional, or erratic. Cluster C comprises avoidant, dependent, and obsessive-compulsive personality disorders, often marked by anxious or fearful behavior.

The exact causes of personality disorders are not fully understood, but they are believed to result from a complex interplay of genetic, environmental, and psychological factors. Difficult childhood experiences, such as abuse, neglect, or unstable family life, are often implicated. Treatment for personality disorders can be challenging and typically involves long-term psychotherapy, such as dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) or psychodynamic therapy. Medication may be used to manage specific symptoms, like anxiety or depression, but it does not cure the underlying disorder. Early intervention and consistent treatment can help individuals manage their symptoms and improve their quality of life.
