Permitlisting

Permitlisting is a relatively new concept in the digital policy and security spheres, referring to the process of whitelisting certain applications, websites, or domains to allow them to operate on a user's device or network. The term is derived from the idea of granting "permissions" to specific entities that are deemed trustworthy or compliant with certain standards.

Permitlisting has evolved as a response to the increasing complexity of digital security threats, where traditional blacklisting-based approaches have become inadequate. Blacklisting involves blocking known malicious software, apps, or websites, but it has limitations, such as requiring continuous updates to keep up with emerging threats. Permitlisting, on the other hand, involves explicitly permitting certain applications or domains to run, allowing them to operate without hindrance.

The key advantage of permitlisting is its potential to reduce the overall testing and validation burden on users and organizations. By pre-authorizing compliant entities, users can leverage permitted applications without worrying about potential conflicts or misbehavior. Permitlisting also enables organizations to more easily implement and enforce security policies.
