Whitelisting, also known as an allowlist, is a security and access control approach that permits only explicitly approved entities or content while blocking everything else. It is used across multiple domains including email, networking, software deployment, and system administration. The goal is to reduce the surface area for malware, spam, or unauthorized access by prescreening entrants against trusted lists.

Common forms of whitelisting include: email whitelisting, which allows messages from approved senders or domains to bypass certain filters; IP address whitelisting, which restricts access to a network or service to known addresses; and software or application whitelisting, which permits the execution of only pre-approved applications or processes. In cloud and container environments, image or artifact whitelisting controls which containers or images may run, and which assets may be deployed.

Benefits of whitelisting include stronger control over what is allowed to interact with systems, reduced risk of malware or phishing from untrusted sources, and lower rates of false positives compared with broad blacklists. The approach can also streamline compliance in regulated environments. However, it introduces operational overhead: maintaining and updating lists, handling legitimate changes, and ensuring timely revocation of permissions when needed. A poorly maintained allowlist can cause legitimate users or services to be blocked, leading to productivity loss and shadow IT growth.

Implementation considerations include static versus dynamic whitelists, integration with identity and access management, auditing and logging, and clear governance for approval, review cycles, and revocation. Robust whitelisting often combines with other controls to address evolving threats and dynamic environments.
