Permetre

Permetre is a pricing term that denotes the cost applied per metre of length for materials measured and sold linearly. It is used when products are bought by length rather than by area or volume. Common applications include textiles, carpets, timber, piping, electrical cables, rope, fencing, and other items cut to length.

In practice, the price per metre (often abbreviated as “per metre” or shown as $/m or £/m) is multiplied by the required length in metres to determine the total cost. For example, a carpet priced at 25 per metre bought in a 4.5-metre length would cost 112.50. If the product has a fixed cross-section or width, the per-metre price typically already reflects that, and the total depends primarily on the chosen length; waste, offcuts, or special lengths may incur additional charges.

Permetre is contrasted with pricing by area, such as per square metre, which is used for products where the area is the primary determinant of cost (for example, paint or vinyl flooring sold by area). Understanding the distinction helps in budgeting and measuring for projects, especially those involving custom lengths or materials supplied in rolls or strips.
