Perimenopaation

Perimenopaation is commonly a misspelling of perimenopause, the transitional phase before menopause during which ovarian function declines and hormone levels fluctuate. It is not a distinct medical diagnosis, but many people experience a recognizable set of changes during this time.

Perimenopause usually begins in the 40s and can start in the late 30s. It lasts for several years, ending when a person has gone 12 consecutive months without a period and is considered menopausal. The exact timing varies widely.

Symptoms commonly associated with perimenopause include irregular or changing menstrual cycles, hot flashes or night sweats, sleep disturbances, mood swings, vaginal dryness, decreased libido, and urinary changes. Some people also notice weight changes or changes in energy. Fertility declines during this period, but pregnancy remains possible until menopause.

Causes are related to gradual declines in ovarian follicle reserve and fluctuating levels of estrogen and progesterone. There is no single test for perimenopause; diagnosis is usually based on age, symptoms, and menstrual history. In some cases a clinician may measure hormone levels to support assessment or perform tests to rule out other conditions.

Management focuses on symptom relief and overall health. Lifestyle measures such as regular exercise, balanced nutrition, smoking cessation, and good sleep hygiene can help. Treatments may include nonhormonal medications (for hot flashes and mood symptoms), hormone therapy when appropriate, and vaginal estrogen for dryness. Regular screening for osteoporosis and cardiovascular risk is advised as the transition continues.
