In this state, funds have not been fully transferred, and the final outcome—whether the payment will be approved, captured, or declined—has not yet been determined.

This status is common in e-commerce platforms, mobile wallets, subscription services, and point-of-sale integrations. The exact meaning can vary by system, but it generally denotes that no final settlement has occurred and the merchant should not recognize revenue as completed.

How it works: When a customer initiates a payment, the gateway or processor may return a Pending status while it communicates with the issuing bank or card network. The order system may reserve inventory or present a pending message to the customer. The next state could be Authorized, Captured/Settled, or Declined, depending on the result of the processor’s checks.

Reasons for pending status include fraud or risk screening, additional authentication (such as 3D Secure), insufficient funds, bank delays, cross-border checks, or transient network issues. Timeframes for resolution vary by processor and payment method and may involve automatic retries or timeouts.

Impact and management: For customers, funds may be reserved but not yet charged; for merchants, revenue recognition is delayed and customer support may handle inquiries. Merchants should communicate clearly, implement appropriate timeouts and retries, and ensure secure handling in line with PCI DSS and other applicable requirements.
