PassiveDefensive is a term used to describe a class of strategies and design choices that emphasize passive protection and automatic resilience over active, on-demand defense. The concept is applied across domains such as military planning, cybersecurity, software architecture, and product design. It focuses on reducing exposure to threats, limiting potential damage, and enabling systems to maintain function in the face of disruption, often without requiring continuous human intervention.

Core ideas include defense-in-depth, redundancy, fail-safe and graceful degradation, security by default, minimal attack surface, and rapid recovery. In practice, PassiveDefensive measures can include physical fortifications, camouflage and decoys in military contexts; encryption, data backups, immutable logs, and network segmentation in cybersecurity; idempotent operations, circuit breakers, retry backoff, and automatic failover in software systems; and clear governance and safety margins in design processes.

Benefits include lower ongoing resource cost, increased resilience to shocks, and simpler monitoring. Limitations include potential blind spots if threats outpace passive measures, potential performance trade-offs, and the need for complementary active defenses for certain adversaries.

Origins are informal; the term appears in design discussions and risk-management literature rather than as a formal doctrine. It is often contrasted with active-defensive or offensive strategies.
