Pallmagasin

Pallmagasin is a term used in Nordic logistics to refer to a storage facility or a section of a warehouse dedicated to pallets, i.e., palletized goods. The word combines pall (pallet) with magasin (storehouse), and is used in Danish, Norwegian and Swedish contexts to describe space where palletized items are received, stored and dispatched.

A pallmagasin typically features pallet racking systems that maximize vertical storage and provide forklift-accessible aisles. Common configurations include selective racking and other high-density layouts, along with forklifts, pallet jacks, and occasional automated handling equipment. The layout is designed to support efficient inbound and outbound flows, batch picking, and cross-docking when needed. Storage policies may use FIFO or other rotation methods depending on product type and customer requirements.

Operations in a pallmagasin cover receiving, put-away, storage, order picking, packing and shipping. Inventory is tracked using a warehouse management system (WMS), with barcodes or RFID to monitor location accuracy and stock levels. Real-time data supports replenishment, cycle counting, and performance metrics such as throughput and dwell time.

Safety and compliance are integral, including traffic management for powered industrial trucks, pallet quality checks, fire protection, and adherence to local regulations for storage of goods.

In practice, pallmagasins are common in retail logistics, manufacturing, and third-party logistics providers where palletized goods form the primary unit of handling.
