Pahvin

Pahvin is the genitive singular form of the Finnish noun pahvi, which designates cardboard or cardboard-like sheet materials produced from cellulose fibers. In everyday Finnish, pahvi refers to a broad range of rigid or semi-rigid paper-based materials used for packaging, crafts, art boards, and light structural applications.

Cardboard describes a family of paper-based materials. Two common forms are solid cardboard (often called paperboard) and corrugated cardboard, which combines flat liner boards with a fluted inner layer to add strength. Thickness, weight, and surface finish vary, and coatings or laminates can affect rigidity and recyclability. Cardboard is valued for being lightweight, relatively inexpensive, and easy to print on, making it popular in consumer packaging and display applications.

Manufacture and recycling are central to its lifecycle. Cardboard is typically produced from wood pulp and can be made by mechanical or chemical pulping processes. It is widely recycled; in many countries, including Finland, cardboard packaging is collected separately from mixed waste and pulped to create new paper products. Contaminants or laminates can complicate recycling, and heavily coated or laminated cardboard may be diverted from standard recycling streams.

Linguistic and practical usage notes include that pahvin appears primarily as a genitive form in phrases such as pahvin kierrätys (cardboard recycling) or pahvin valmistus (manufacture of cardboard). It is used to reference cardboard in discussions of materials, packaging, and waste management, rather than as a standalone brand name or distinct material category.
