PTFE-based materials are materials in which polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is the primary component or a major reinforcing or functional phase. They include PTFE homopolymers, PTFE blends, and PTFE-based composites. The base PTFE contributes exceptional chemical resistance, high temperature stability, very low friction, and good electrical insulation, making these materials suitable for demanding industrial and consumer applications.

Key properties of PTFE-based materials include excellent chemical inertness and resistance to solvents, wide operating temperature ranges (continuous use generally up to around 260°C with higher peak tolerances before degradation), a very low coefficient of friction, and good dielectric strength. The material is also known for a non-stick surface and low permeability to gases and liquids. However, PTFE is relatively difficult to process on its own due to high melt viscosity, so many PTFE-based products rely on specific fabrication methods or fillers to tailor mechanical properties.

Processing and forms often involve compression molding, ram or paste extrusion, and sintering to form desired shapes. In composites, PTFE is combined with fillers such as bronze, graphite, carbon fiber, or glass to enhance wear resistance, strength, or thermal conductivity. PTFE-based coatings are applied as thin films on substrates to provide low-friction and anti-adhesive surfaces in cookware, machinery, and industrial equipment.

Applications of PTFE-based materials span seals, gaskets, and bearings in chemical and aerospace industries, linings for corrosive environments, anti-stick coatings for cookware, electrical insulators, and other sliding or non-stick surface applications. Recycling and disposal present challenges due to the stability of PTFE and potential environmental concerns if degraded or overheated.
