PICAX

PICAX, commonly referred to as PICAXE, is a family of microcontroller boards and a software environment aimed at education and hobbyists. The platform originated with Revolution Education and is now marketed by PICAX Technologies. It uses PIC microcontrollers with a built-in interpreter that executes a simplified BASIC-based language, permitting users to program hardware without extensive knowledge of low-level code.

Programming is done in the PICAXE Programming Editor, which runs on major desktop platforms; code is uploaded to the device via USB or serial interface. The language, called PICAXE BASIC, provides straightforward commands for I/O, timing, variables, subroutines, and control structures, aiming to reduce programming barriers while remaining capable for educational projects.

Hardware offerings span a range from compact, low-pin-count boards to larger devices, typically providing digital input/output, PWM outputs, analog inputs, and communication options such as serial and I2C. Boards are designed for rapid prototyping of sensors, actuators, robotics, and embedded projects, and they often include built-in support components to simplify hardware connections.

The PICAXE ecosystem includes extensive documentation, tutorials, example programs, and a supportive user community. It is widely used in schools and among hobbyists to teach concepts in programming, electronics, and control systems.
