PGPGPGsähköposti, often abbreviated as PGP email, refers to the use of Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) software for encrypting and/or signing electronic mail. PGP is a widely used encryption program that provides cryptographic privacy and authentication for data communications. When applied to email, PGP enables users to send messages that are only readable by the intended recipient and to verify the sender's identity.

The core functionality of PGP email relies on public-key cryptography. Each user has a pair of keys: a public key, which can be freely distributed, and a private key, which must be kept secret. To send an encrypted email, the sender uses the recipient's public key to encrypt the message. Only the recipient, with their corresponding private key, can then decrypt and read the message. This ensures confidentiality, preventing unauthorized access to the email's content.

In addition to encryption, PGP can also be used for digital signatures. The sender uses their private key to create a digital signature for the email. The recipient can then use the sender's public key to verify the signature. This process confirms that the message originated from the claimed sender and has not been altered in transit, providing authentication and integrity.

Implementing PGP email typically involves installing PGP software or a compatible email client with PGP integration. Users then need to exchange public keys with those they wish to communicate securely with. While PGP email offers robust security, its adoption can sometimes be limited by the perceived complexity of key management for some users. Nevertheless, it remains a powerful tool for individuals and organizations requiring a high level of email privacy and security.
