PDCAperiaatteeseen, often referred to as the PDCA cycle or Deming cycle, is an iterative four-step management method used for the control and continuous improvement of processes and products. The acronym PDCA stands for Plan, Do, Check, and Act.

The Plan phase involves identifying a problem or opportunity for improvement, analyzing the current situation, and developing a plan for change. This includes setting objectives, defining metrics for success, and outlining the steps to be taken.

The Do phase is the implementation of the plan. This is where the changes are put into action, often on a small scale or as a pilot test. Data is collected during this phase to measure the effectiveness of the changes.

The Check phase involves analyzing the data collected during the Do phase. The results are compared against the expected outcomes and objectives set in the Plan phase. This step identifies what worked, what didn't, and why.

The Act phase is where adjustments are made based on the findings of the Check phase. If the changes were successful, they are standardized and implemented more broadly. If not, the cycle may begin again with a revised plan, or further investigation may be needed. The PDCA cycle emphasizes that continuous improvement is an ongoing process, not a one-time event. It is widely applied in various fields, including business, manufacturing, healthcare, and software development, to enhance quality, efficiency, and customer satisfaction.
