OxygenOS

OxygenOS is a custom software distribution for OnePlus smartphones, built on the Android operating system. It provides a user experience that is closer to stock Android than many manufacturer skins, while adding features and optimizations tailored to OnePlus devices. The aim is to deliver fast performance, a clean interface, and reliable software updates.

Origins and scope: OxygenOS was introduced in the mid-2010s as the global successor to CyanogenMod on the OnePlus line, beginning with the OnePlus One. It expanded to other OnePlus devices over the years. A China-specific variant named HydrogenOS was also distributed to align with local app ecosystems and services. Updates are provided as over-the-air releases and may vary by device and region.

Design and features: OxygenOS is designed to be lightweight and efficient, offering a near-stock Android feel complemented by useful OnePlus-specific options. Common features include gesture controls and screen-off gestures, a customizable launcher with a Shelf feature, a system-wide dark theme, and Reading Mode. The ROM emphasizes minimal bloatware and smooth performance, while allowing users to tailor navigation, display, and other preferences.

Development and status: OxygenOS is developed and maintained by OnePlus and is updated in step with Android releases for supported devices. In the mid- to late-2020s, OnePlus began integrating some development work with OPPO’s ColorOS to streamline release cycles, while continuing to support a distinct OxygenOS experience on its devices. OxygenOS remains the primary software layer on most OnePlus smartphones.
