Ovulasjonskits, also known as ovulation predictor kits (OPKs), are over-the-counter tests that detect a surge in luteinizing hormone (LH) in urine, signaling the approach of ovulation. By identifying the fertile window, they help individuals plan if pregnancy is desired.

Most kits work by testing urine for LH. When LH rises, the test line appears as dark or darker than the control line. Digital tests may display a clear yes or high LH signal. To use, follow the product instructions: test once per day beginning several days before the expected ovulation, typically in the afternoon, and avoid drinking large amounts of fluids before testing; tracking cycle length helps estimate when to start testing.

Interpreting results: A positive LH surge is usually indicated by a test line that matches or exceeds the control line, suggesting ovulation will occur within 24–36 hours. A negative result indicates no surge. If no lines appear or the control line is absent, the test is invalid and should be repeated with a new test.

Effectiveness and limitations: OPKs predict ovulation rather than confirm it. Many people ovulate soon after a surge, but some cycles may not produce a clear surge. Factors such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), perimenopause, certain medications, or recent pregnancy can affect results. Hormonal birth control use and some fertility medications can interfere. They are most effective in cycles with regular rhythms.

Alternative methods: Basal body temperature tracking, observation of cervical mucus, and fertility monitors that measure multiple hormones can supplement OPKs. For persistent irregular cycles or fertility concerns, consult a healthcare professional.
