The provisioning process typically includes device enrollment, policy or profile distribution, configuration of settings, delivery and installation of software or firmware updates, activation or commissioning, and ongoing management or eventual decommissioning. Provisioning can be push-based, initiated by a central server, or pull-based, where devices fetch updates on demand. It is often performed within a managed framework to ensure consistency and compliance.

Architectures for OTAP commonly involve a device agent or management client on the endpoint, a management server or cloud service, and secure communication channels. The server stores profiles, updates, and policies, while the agent applies them and reports status. Security is a central concern and generally includes strong device/server authentication, integrity and authenticity checks (such as code signing), encryption in transit, and mechanisms for rollback or safe-fail if an update fails. Some implementations also incorporate device attestation and secure boot features to verify the device state.

Standards and protocols widely associated with OTAP include Open Mobile Alliance Device Management (OMA DM) and Lightweight M2M (LwM2M), the latter commonly used in IoT contexts. Enterprise environments may rely on Mobile Device Management (MDM) or Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) frameworks that coordinate OTA provisioning at scale.

Benefits of OTAP include reduced manual intervention, scalable device onboarding, and timely security and feature updates. Challenges involve ensuring security, maintaining compatibility across device varieties, and handling update failures or network outages.
