Oronasale
Oronasale is a term used in anatomy and clinical medicine to describe a communication between the oral and nasal cavities. The oronasal route can be congenital or acquired and results in an abnormal connection that allows passage of air, saliva, or food between the mouth and nose. In humans and many animals, the oral and nasal cavities are separated by the palate; when the barrier is incomplete or breached, an oronasale communication may form, most commonly as an oronasal fistula associated with cleft palate or complications after palatal surgery. It can also arise from facial trauma, infection, tumors, radiation, or after dental or maxillofacial procedures.
Symptoms typically include nasal regurgitation of liquids during swallowing, hypernasal or nasal-sounding speech, chronic nasal discharge,
Diagnosis is based on physical examination and functional tests, often supplemented by dye tests that reveal
Treatment aims to restore separation between the two cavities. Small fistulas may respond to conservative measures
Prognosis depends on defect size, underlying cause, and surgical technique, but successful repair can significantly improve
