Operationsmikroskopet

Operationsmikroskopet, known in English as the operating microscope, is a specialized optical instrument used to perform microsurgical procedures. It provides high magnification, stereo vision, and bright, shadow-free illumination to allow surgeons to visualize small structures during surgery.

It typically consists of a binocular microscope mounted on a stand or ceiling system, with adjustable magnification (commonly from about 2x to 40x or more), adjustable working distance, and a coaxial or separate illumination system. Many models offer integrated digital cameras and 3D visualization, heads-up displays, or video recording.

Applications include neurosurgery (aneurysm clipping, tumor resection), ophthalmology (corneal or intraocular procedures), otolaryngology (facial nerve, skull base), plastic and reconstructive surgery, and vascular and general microsurgery.

History: The operating microscope became widely adopted in the latter half of the 20th century, driven by advances in optical design by manufacturers and surgeons, enabling microsurgical approaches.

Advantages and limitations: The operating microscope provides improved accuracy, enhanced depth perception, and reduced tissue trauma; it allows delicate maneuvers in narrow spaces. Limitations include cost, space requirements, and the need for specialized training; setup time can be longer, and there can be ergonomic strain if not used with proper posture.
