While any suitable venue can host opera, an oopperatalo is typically designed to accommodate large-scale vocal and orchestral productions and to support the specific needs of opera staging, such as complex scenery, multiple sets, and an orchestra pit.

A typical oopperatalo includes an auditorium with good sightlines and acoustics, a proscenium or other stage configuration, a sizeable orchestra pit, and fly towers or other mechanisms for moving scenery. Behind the scenes are extensive spaces for sets, costumes, rehearsals, and workshops, along with lobbies, foyers, and public facilities. Acoustical design is a central consideration, balancing vocal projection with orchestral balance so that voices can be heard clearly over the orchestra.
