Onæmisglóbúlíntherapia, commonly known as intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapy, is a medical treatment involving the administration of high doses of antibodies derived from the plasma of many donors. These antibodies, known as immunoglobulins, primarily consist of immunoglobulin G (IgG), which plays a critical role in the immune system by targeting and neutralizing pathogens such as bacteria and viruses. The therapy is typically used to supplement or modulate the immune response in patients with primary immunodeficiency disorders, autoimmune diseases, or certain infectious conditions.

The process begins with the collection of blood plasma from healthy donors, which is then processed to extract and purify the immunoglobulins. These antibodies are subsequently pooled, concentrated, and formulated into a sterile solution for intravenous infusion. Onæmisglóbúlíntherapia is administered through a vein, usually in a hospital or clinical setting, where the patient receives the immunoglobulin preparation over several hours.
