Offsettaaminen is a Finnish term that refers to the act of offsetting or compensating for an environmental impact. This concept is most commonly applied in the context of carbon emissions. When an entity, such as a company or an individual, cannot completely eliminate its greenhouse gas emissions, it can choose to offset the remaining emissions by investing in projects that reduce or remove an equivalent amount of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere.

These offsetting projects can take various forms. They might include reforestation initiatives, where trees are planted to absorb carbon dioxide, or investments in renewable energy sources that replace fossil fuel-based power generation. Other methods involve improving energy efficiency in industrial processes or supporting projects that capture methane from landfills.
